FORMER SOUND TIGERS COMPETE FOR CALDER CUP

May 27, 2008

If you’re like most Sound Tiger fans, it has been a long month and a half since the last time the Sound Tigers hit the ice.  A lot of hockey has taken place since then.

Alain NasreddineThe Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins won the Eastern Conference championship on Saturday night, beating the Portland Pirates in Game 7 by the score of 3-2. With Portland leading 3 games to 2 and the series shifting back to Wachovia Arena in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, the Penguins were able to mount a comeback.  The Pirates had a 3-0 lead in Game 6 but could not hold on as the Penguins rattled off three tallies of their own, sending the game into overtime.  Connor James only needed 20 seconds to punch Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s ticket to Game 7, scoring his seventh of the post-season and second of the game.  In Game 7, the roles were reversed as the Penguins blew their own lead when Portland came back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game going into the third period.  With less then a minute to play in regulation both teams seemed prepared for an extra session but Tim Brent was able to poke his eleventh marker of the playoffs past Jean-Sebastien Aubin to capture the Penguins’ first trip back to the finals since 2004.

In the Western Conference, the Chicago Wolves secured a Calder Cup bid, knocking off the Toronto Marlies in their best-of-seven series, 4 games to 1.  The Wolves dominated the series sweeping the first three contests before dropping Game 4 in Toronto.  Chicago closed out the series in Game 5 back home at Allstate Arena, defeating the Marlies 4-2.

The matchup between the Penguins and Wolves will feature two former Sound Tigers going head-to-head in search of the Calder Cup.

Jason KrogJason Krog, who played for the Sound Tigers in the inaugural season, has had a career year this season with Chicago, playing in all 80 games, leading the league in scoring with 39 goals and 73 assists for 112 points.  In the playoffs, Krog also leads the league in scoring with nine goals and 19 assists for 28 points in 18 games.

One of the most be-loved former players from the Sound Tigers, Alain Nasreddine, has led the Penguins to the Calder Cup Finals.  Nasreddine donned the Sound Tiger jersey from 2002-2004.  Following that season, Nasreddine joined the Pittsburgh Penguins organization and has been there ever since.

Both Krog and Nasreddine have seen playing time with their clubs’ NHL affiliates.  Krog played 14 games with the Atlanta Thrashers last season and had a goal and three assists.  Nasreddine has played parts of the last three seasons in Pittsburgh and scored his first NHL goal last year.
